Plenty was on the line Saturday afternoon in Lexington, with Kentucky and South Carolina needing to come out with wins. Head coach Shane Beamer felt good taking his team on the road and wound up getting the job done. A performance he is incredibly proud of, taking out some “lazy narratives” about his team.

“What an unbelievable statement by our defense but an unbelievable statement about our entire program,” Beamer said postgame with ESPN’s Molly McGrath. “There was a perception out there about our team this week but it wasn’t reality. We knew what kind of team we have.

“There were some lazy narratives out there this week about this team. We got a bunch of tough, gritty young men, starting with our quarterback. Offense, defense, special teams, everybody did it today. That’s a team win.”

South Carolina was predicted to finish 13th in the preseason SEC poll, second to last of the old SEC East bunch. Only Vanderbilt was behind the Gamecocks. For comparison, Kentucky was No. 11.

Beamer has always brought a little extra edge when facing Kentucky, being a fun matchup. South Carolina made sure to show up in full capacity, specifically the defense. They played well week-over-week after facing Old Dominion. Brock Vandagriff struggled until he was taken off the field in the fourth quarter.

It may have taken a while but the South Carolina offense enjoyed some success with LaNorris Sellers running the show. While Beamer is proud of the improvement shown, he knows the unit needs to get better moving forward.

“We got better,” Beamer said. “The exciting thing is, we can be so much better. What a performance by our defense. We gave them three with the turnover. But the offense made plays. We had a hell of a second half. LaNorris is gritty, he’s going to continue to learn. We’re going to continue to get better on offense. That’s the exciting thing.”

LSU is next on the schedule, with kickoff scheduled for noon ET at Williams-Brice Stadium. Beamer wants the fans to get there early and bring energy for a team he believes has “all the ingredients” to be successful in 2024.
