Sherrone Moore breaks down decision to start Davis Warren over Alex Orji at QB
On Saturday, Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore stunned viewers when he started former walk-on Davis Warren at quarterback over Alex Orji, who many assumed would be the team’s QB1. After the Wolverines’ 30-10 win over Fresno State, Moore revealed how Warren earned the starting spot.
“Just training camp. Him and Alex had a really good training camp, but ultimately, he won the job the last week, really,” Moore said. “He was just consistent. He took care of the football, made plays against that defense that you saw out there.
“For us, they played hard for both players, but he ultimately took the job and won it. So, that made the decision easier for us.”
In the win, Warren completed 15-of-his-25 pass attempts for 118 yards and a touchdown while throwing an interception. Orji also saw action but his playing time was limited. He only threw two passes, one of which was for a touchdown.

However, Orji out-paced Warren in the ground game, tallying five carries for 32 yards. Although Warren’s debut start was far from record-breaking, Moore was happy with the senior QB’s performance.

“Really, I thought Davis did a good job putting the football where it needs to be. The one pick, we tell our guys on the sideline, at some point we’ve got to go up and you’ve got to go play defense, too,” Moore said. “You’ve got to go get the ball. But I thought [Warren] really did a great job controlling the offense.”
Before his start against Fresno State, Davis Warren had made nine appearances for the Wolverines and collected 89 passing yards. He had not previously scored a touchdown. Now, Warren will have at least 11 more opportunities to add to his career totals.
Alas, the quarterback competition isn’t entirely over in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
“[Warren] did a really good job just managing the offense and doing things the right way. Super happy for him and we’ll keep using him, keep using Orji, but both those guys did a really good job,” Moore said.
On Saturday, Michigan will look to secure its second win of the season as it squares off against No. 4 Texas. The game will be broadcast on FOX.
