Sherrone Moore: Michigan is 'close' to naming starting quarterback
Going into his first season as the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, Sherrone Moore inherited a team dealing with plenty of turnover. That included turnover at the quarterback position and an eventual battle to become the starter.
Now, with the first game of the season around the corner, Moore shared that Michigan is getting close to naming a starting quarterback and he thinks the team is in a good place.
“We’re close,” Sherrone Moore said. “We’ll figure that out soon, though. We’re in a good place.”
At this point, Alex Orji and Davis Warren are the two quarterbacks competing for the starting job. For now, the two of them are sharing reps in practice according to Sherrone Moore and they’ll be told who ears the job some point ahead of the game.

“Yeah, we’ll just see who practices better these next couple days, and then we’ll make a decision whether it’s Friday, whether it’s right before the game,” Moore said. “We’ll let them know, and then everybody else will find out at the same time.”
Sherrone Moore wasn’t willing to share if he’d consider any kind of mid-game quarterback rotation or share his thoughts on that kind of system. However, he did make it clear that he believes it can work under the right circumstances.
“Yeah, I’ve been a part of it. I’ve been a part of it here. I’ve seen it work. I’ve seen it not work. So, we’re just going to do whatever it takes to win. I don’t think there’s really a yes or no, or what’s better, what’s not. You go back to the years of Tim Tebow and Chris Leak. It worked out pretty well for them,” Moore said. “But there’s teams that have done it and haven’t worked out well, so we’ll just figure out what’s our best formula to win.”

Alex Orji is a former four-star recruit in the 2022 cycle and a phenomenal athlete. He got some playing time last season, playing in six games primarily as a rushing threat. Meanwhile, Davis Warren made three appearances last season for Michigan in mop-up duty. Now, it’s been fairly even for the two in terms of the reps they’re sharing.
“It’s been pretty even,” Moore said. “They’ve done a really good job of it. It’s been even snaps throughout. Maybe it’s one with him, one with the next guy. It’s been an even distribution. Those guys have done an outstanding job and obviously made it very hard for us to make a decision right now.”
While plenty of people might have assumed that Alex Orji would win the starting job, Sherrone Moore isn’t surprised that Davis Warren has made this such a tough competition.
“If you know Davis Warren, if you know him on a personal level and what he’s been through, that kid’s a fighter,” Moore said. “So, you knew it was not just going to be given to anybody. He had to go earn it and he’s earned the opportunity to, you know, compete for it, and that’s what he’s been doing.”
Sherrone Moore will need to decide on a starting quarterback relatively soon. Michigan opens the season against Fresno State on August 31st.
