Balas And Skene Discuss Michigan Win Over Arkansas State

Michigan Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore entered his first season running the program with questions at the quarterback position. Now, through three weeks, from the outside looking in, that position still seems like it could be an issue for the team.

Despite that, when asked after Michigan’s win on Saturday over Arkansas State if he was concerned about the quarterbacks being an issue for the Wolverines, Moore pushed back on that idea. Instead, he insisted the unit will continue to improve.

“I wouldn’t call them an issue,” Sherrone Moore said. “We’re just gonna go to work. So, we’ll get better as we did in the running game last week. We’ll get better in the passing game and we’ll continue to strive forward.”

For the first three games of the season, Michigan has started Davis Warren. However, after he threw three interceptions against Arkansas State, Sherrone Moore benched him for Alex Orji. In his playing time, Orji only threw four pass attempts but did have a touchdown pass.

After the game, Moore praised Orji for how he controlled the Wolverines offense when he got his opportunity.

“Davis was playing good, but you can’t have those turnovers,” Moore said. “Orji went in there and did a good job, missed the one throw, but thought he controlled the offense pretty well. We’ll go from there.”

Through three games this season, Davis Warren has completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 444 yards and two touchdowns with six interceptions. He’s also rushed for exactly zero yards on eight attempts, with sacks being taken off his rushing total. For his part, Alex Orji has had limited playing time but has completed three of six passing attempts for 15 yards and two touchdowns. He’s also rushed for 58 yards on 10 attempts.

As a team, Michigan is averaging 23.3 points per game, which is 99th in scoring offense. That’s largely impacted by being 121st in passing offense, averaging just 153 passing yards per game, and being tied for 129th in interceptions with those six from Warren.

Now, after benching Davis Warren for Alex Orji, Sherrone Moore does need to make a decision at the quarterback position. Either that change was a permanent one or he’s going to go back to the player the Wolverines have started in every game to this point.

Sherrone Moore explains decision to bench Davis Warren

Following the Arkansas State game, Sherrone Moore explained his decision to bench Davis Warren for Alex Orji.

“Yeah. I mean, just can’t have ’em,” Moore said. “Put the ball in harm’s way too many times, so made a change and we’ll continue practice and go from there.”

Next week, Michigan plays a major step up in competition when the Wolverines host the USC Trojans.
