SMU transfer QB Preston Stone signs with Northwestern
QB Preston Stone has signed with Northwestern out of the NCAA Transfer Portal. On3’s Pete Nakos confirmed the news.
Stone entered the portal the day after it opened to end his fourth season with the Mustangs. However, he remained with SMU until the end of the season with them having made the College Football Playoff. The Mustangs lost to Penn State on Saturday, 38-10.
Stone just completed his redshirt junior season in Dallas. While there, he appeared in 28 games with just over a dozen starts. However, Stone, who was SMU’s QB1 for all of last fall, lost that starting job to start off this season to Kevin Jennings.
In that college career, Stone is 267-450 (59.3%) for 4,030 yards, 35 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Most of that came as a full-time starter in 2023 with 3,197 yards, 28 touchdowns, and six picks on 59.9% completion while also rushing for four more scores. That led an offense that finished eighth in scoring that year at 38.7 ppg. and a team that went 11-1 as winners of the AAC Championship.

Stone, a Dallas native, played high school football at Parish Episcopal School. He was the No. 123 overall recruit as a four-star prospect in the 2021 cycle. He also rated as the No. 14 QB and the No. 20 player out of Texas in that class. That’s according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
