Sonny Dykes and his wife, Kate, have made a significant donation to the athletics program at TCU.

In a release on Tuesday, the Horned Frogs announced the million-dollar gift from the Dykes. They will do so in the names of Jamal Powell, a former offensive lineman at TCU, and Shirley Enis, a passed wife of a trustee in Forth Worth in Hunter Enis.

“Sonny and I are so appreciative to be at TCU,” Mrs. Dykes said in the statement. “When we first came here in 2017, we saw how special the TCU community is. We are very proud to give back to a place that means so much to our family and recognize Jamal Powell and Shirley Enis for the impact they made on our lives.”

TCU President Daniel Pullin also shared a quote on the donation from the Dykes.

“The generous gift from Sonny and Kate Dykes is a powerful endorsement of their confidence in the trajectory of TCU Athletics,” said Pullin. “We are so grateful for their generosity, which helps TCU to continue to provide the best resources and support for our student-athletes, and for honoring the memory of Jamal Powell and Shirley Enis, two individuals who loved the Horned Frogs deeply and will always be remembered throughout our community.”

Powell lettered for three seasons for TCU at the start of the 2000s. He then crossed paths with Dykes as his offensive line coach at SMU in 2018. However, he passed away in 2021 at the age of 39.

With this gift in Powell’s memory, he will be the namesake for the new weight room at the Harrison Family Football Performance Center. The construction of the facility began in January earlier this year.

As for Enis, the Dykes donation is meant to focus more on women’s athletics for the Horned Frogs.

This is quite the contribution by the school’s sitting football coach and his family. It’ll now hopefully benefit teams across campus for TCU.
