Report: Texas defensive back enters NCAA transfer portal
Texas junior defensive back Tyler Owens intends to enter the NCAA transfer portal, according to Joe Cook of On3’s Inside Texas.
Owens was in his third year with the Longhorns. He attended Plano East High School (Texas). So far in the 2021 season, he had notched just two tackles in limited action. During his three seasons in Austin, he tallied 13 total tackles and one start for the Longhorns.
Many people in the Texas fan base had high expectations for Owens as a Longhorn. However, those lofty expectations have not come to fruition and after never consistently cracking the depth chart–he’s in the transfer portal to find a new home.
Owens was a promising high school prospect with blazing speed
As a high school prospect, Owens was named a U.S. Army All-American in 2019. He also competed in track and field in high school. A standout track athlete, Owens was part of a 4 x 200 meter relay team that set the school record (1:25.71). His personal record in the 100-meter dash was a 10.29.
On the football field for Plano East, Owens recorded 67 tackles, three tackles for loss, two interceptions and eight pass breakups as a senior.

Coming out of high school, he boasted 15 scholarship offers from Baylor, UCLA, Nebraska and Houston.
The Texas native has blazing speed so it will be very interesting to see if he can latch on with a team somewhere and tap in to his once promising potential.

Transfer Portal
The transfer portal has surged in popularity over the past year as the NCAA announced the NCAA transfer rule waiver exemption in the spring of 2021. The waiver exemption legislation was truly a landscape-altering piece of legislation across college athletics. The rule allows all players in college athletics to transfer once in their careers and be immediately eligible without sitting out a year.
