South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers tackles teammate Juju McDowell on breakaway run
LaNorris Sellers, South Carolina’s new starting quarterback, picked up a tackle on Saturday — but probably not how he hoped to have it happen.
After running back Juju McDowell took a handoff the right and bounced it back around the left end, Sellers barreled downhill to get ahead of his back and throw a block. But his zeal to help out his teammate may have cost him.
As Sellers caught up with and tried to get past McDowell on his right, his leg caught McDowell’s foot coming back during a stride, sending the running back tumbling to the turf after a first down.
The Gamecocks held a 10-7 lead when the game was suspended in the second quarter due to inclement weather.
The South Carolina-ODU game was briefly weather delayed
The South Carolina vs. Old Dominion football game is set to resume at 5:58 p.m. following a lightning delay. The Gamecocks are holding a 10-7 lead and had the ball when lightning was detected in the area.
Players headed for the locker room during the delay. According to weather.com, scattered storms were in the area. The game was delayed with 12:28 left in the second quarter.
Sellers has struggled thus far and is 1-for-5 passing for -3 yards. He does lead the Gamecocks with 45 rushing yards.
The Gamecocks did score a touchdown when Arkansas transfer Raheim “Rocket” Sanders ran it in from a yard out early in the first quarter.

Defensively, South Carolina gave up a big play early in the first quarter as Old Dominion receiver Isiah Page scored on a 72-yard pass from ODU quarterback Grant Wilson.
However, the Gamecocks defense has already forced two turnovers. Defensive lineman Kyle Kennard has led the way with 3.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble.
Prior to the delay, South Carolina coach Shane Beamer said that he has a ton of confidence in Sellers.
Beamer spoke with the SEC Network before the game about what he expects to see from Sellers and what the Gamecocks need to do around him in order for the South Carolina offense to be successful.
“I’m excited to watch him. I just told him, we’ve got a lot of new guys. We’re going to make some mistakes. We’re young, particularly on offense. But he’s extremely talented,” Shane Beamer said. “We’ve gotta be great around him. We’ve gotta run the ball. And he’s a gamer. There’s other freshmen I’m worried about. I’m not worried about that guy.”
