Stephon Castle, 2023’s No. 1 Shooting Guard, commits to UConn
Stephon Castle, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard out of Covington (Ga.) Newton has committed to UConn basketball for the class of 2023, he tells On3.
Castle is the Huskies’ first commitment of the 2023 class. He chose UConn over Auburn, Arkansas, Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Ohio State.
Stephon Castle is the No. 23 prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is ranked as the No. 1 shooting guard and the No. 3 player in Georgia.
Why UConn?
“It was really just the coaching staff and the culture that they have there,” Castle said. “There aren’t any pro teams in Connecticut so basketball is the biggest thing out there. It’s not a football school, it’s a primary basketball school. The way the coaches push their players…they don’t pick favorites and they push everybody the same way so they can all reach their highest potential and I really liked that…I feel like they can help me get to the NBA, which is my main goal.”

What stood out about UConn?
“They were real with me,” Castle said. “They told me that I’m a one, maybe two-year player…they’re going to build around me and they’re gonna try to win this thing in the tournament.”
What can Husky fans expect from Castle?
“Husky fans can expect from me…playing hard every single game,” Castle said. “I’m just going to give it my all while I’m there…in practice, behind closed doors by myself, every game. I just wanna play hard and feed off my teammates’ energy. I’m very unselfish.”
When did it click for Castle?
“I didn’t really know before the visit, it came on me while I was there,” Castle said. “I was enjoying the visit so much and I loved the way Coach (Dan) Hurley coached. I told them on the visit that I was coming. They were all ecstatic. I don’t think they expected it so early from me, but they were all super happy. I didn’t rush it at all. I just knew UConn would be home for me and I knew I wanted to play there.”
