Steve Sarkisian breaks down challenge of preparing for two Michigan quarterbacks

Texas heads to Ann Arbor to take on Michigan for a blockbuster Week 2 matchup between two of the nations top 10-ranked teams. However, the Longhorns are preparing for a new-look Wolverines offense under first-year head coach Sherrone Moore.
Moore has opted to conduct his offense through a two-quarterback system with Davis Warren and Alex Orji. Warren was given the nod, but Orji saw a fair few snaps throughout the day mainly as a running threat. Working against a unique rotation, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian revealed some of the scouting he’s done against the Wolverines’ offense heading into their matchup.
“The challenges is Davis’ ability to operate their offense,” Sarkisian told media on Thursday. “There are so many things that systematically they do that are on the quarterback at the line of scrimmage, and I think that [Warren] definitely has got a good head on his shoulders and can make those necessary checks and different things at the line of scrimmage, protection, changes and so on.
“And I think it’s critical for us to recognize when [Orji] is in the game, and I think it’s going to be critical for us to recognize when they leave both of them on the field at the same time. We have to be ready for things that maybe they haven’t put on tape yet, and one of which being those two guys on the field together.”

Warren finished Week 1’s 30-10 victory over Fresno State completing 15 of 25 passes for 118 yards while throwing one touchdown and an interception in the season opener. Orji threw two passes with his only completion being a three-yard pass to Donovan Edwards for the Wolverines’ first toucdown of the season. Orji was also used for his dual-threat abilities, carrying the ball five times for 32 yards.
With no clear successor for last season’s national championship-winning quarterback JJ McCarthy‘s set in stone for the 2024 season, head coach Sherrone Moore may continue to utilize both quarterbacks throughout the season.
For now, that’s what Sarkisian has scouted for. His Longhorns’ road trip against Michigan is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 7 at Noon ET live on FOX. The Wolverines have not lost inside Michigan Stadium since the shortened 2020 season.
