Steve Sarkisian on Quinn Ewers' future: 'He's the quarterback of that team'
Arch Manning will be the first quarterback out there for Texas on Saturday, getting his first-ever start against Louisiana-Monroe. Tons of attention has surrounded the quarterback situation in Austin ever since Quinn Ewers went down with an injury.
Steve Sarkisian has made his intentions quite clear, though. This is a team capable of winning a championship and Ewers will be the starter once back to full health. No quarterback controversy will take place.
“He’s in really good spirits,” Sarkisian said. “One thing I tried to impress upon Quinn is — all the goals he had and that we’ve had for him coming into the season are all still there for him. I think we have a national championship-caliber team and he’s the quarterback of that team. I think we still have that in front of us to go do that.”
Team goals always take priority, Sarkisian and Ewers would be the first two to remind you. But the head coach knows Ewers is capable of accomplishing a ton individually as Texas goes on its journey to a hopeful national championship. We’re talking Heisman Trophy and potentially being one of the first names called at the 2025 NFL Draft.

Being out for one game against Louisiana-Monroe (even potentially Sept. 28 vs. Mississippi State) does not change those goals. Sarkisian notes some of the big-time matchups on Texas’ schedule, providing Ewers the stage to showcase himself at the highest level.

“I think with some of the games we have coming up down the road, this guy is going to be in New York for the Heisman,” Sarkisian said. “Whether he wins it or not but he has the ability to do that. I think he has the ability to be a top-five NFL Draft pick. All the things that I think are capable of are still out there for him.”
Watching from the sideline could have Ewers wondering ‘What if?’, especially if Manning performs well again. At the very least, he is not out there playing as the Texas starting quarterback, a position Ewers has expressed pride in having before.
While it’s a potentially tough situation to push through, Sarkisian has made sure Ewers has the bigger picture in mind.
“You get a little down when you don’t get to do what you love to do,” Sarkisian said. “And he loves to play football. I think his understanding of he’s getting healthy and he’s getting healthy quickly and that all the goals are still out there in front of him to achieve this season has really inspired him to get back and to feel good. And when his number is called, be ready to play.”
