Saturday afternoon was an eye-opener for both Miami and Florida but on completely different levels. Down in Coral Gables, there might be a sense of a special season ahead, getting a program-defining win under head coach Mario Cristobal. A lot of credit has to go to Cam Ward too for his play in the Swamp.

Ward performed so well, former Florida head coach Steve Spurrier believes the Miami quarterback is a legitimate candidate to win the Heisman Trophy. Spurrier liked what he saw from Ward but also mentioned the Hurricanes’ schedule as a big factor. Ward could have an opportunity to put up numbers as Miami stacks wins this season.

“Cam Ward’s that good,” Spurrier said. “He’s up for the Heisman now. He’s up for the Heisman and could win it. Because their schedule is not too terrible. They’re favorites.”

Ward threw for 385 yards and three touchdowns against Florida while completing 26 of 35 passes. Yes, there was an interception in there but at times, the game looked easy for Ward. Miami’s offense had their way with the Gators at time, making a huge statement.

Looking at the schedule Spurrier mentioned, the next three games are against nonconference opponents. USF on Sept. 21 is the hardest of the bunch, especially on the road. Florida A&M and Ball State will both be home games for Miami.

ACC play will begin on Sept. 27 against Virginia Tech, another game set to be played at Hard Rock Stadium. The Florida State rivalry matchup is likely the toughest game out there, as usual. Traveling to Georgia Tech and Louisville is nothing to look over either.

If Ward can come through in those three games, surely a Heisman moment will be produced. Team success plays a huge factor in winning college football’s most prestigious trophy too. As of Monday, On3’s Andy Staples has Miami representing the ACC in the College Football Playoff as the No. 3 seed in Bracketology.

There is still a long way to go, with 11 regular season games and conference championship weekend taking place before the Heisman is handed out. But Ward certainly made a splash in Week 1, gaining the attention of Spurrier and others across the country.
