After dropping the opener at Utah, Florida is going to have a key SEC game in September against the Tennessee Volunteers. That’s a game that will see Joe Milton and the Tennessee offense travel to The Swamp.

One person who is going to have his eye on the game is Steve Spurrier. On the Paul Finebaum Show, Spurrier praised Milton, saying that he was excited to see him in The Swamp.

“I think he’s a good player,” Steve Spurrier said. “I think Tennessee’s gonna be good. I’m really looking forward to that game two weeks from now. Tennessee comes down to The Swamp.”

Joe Milton is in his third season at Tennessee. For the most part, he has been the backup to Hendon Hooker. However, he took over at the end of the 2022 season when Hooker went down with an injury. This season, Hooker is the full-time starter.

For his part, Spurrier never made many friends with Tennessee fans while coaching the Gators. That doesn’t mean he isn’t excited for this game, though.

“Last time they beat us down there, it might have been my last year, 2001. They sort of upset us. We had a heck of a team and so forth. But anyway, two weeks from now when Tennessee comes to The Swamp. … That’ll be a big one for both teams, certainly.”

In Tennessee’s opener against Virginia, Joe Milton and the Volunteers got off to a slightly slow start before the offense started to roll. In the end, Tennessee won 49-13 and Milton had 201 yards passing with two touchdowns.

Florida and Tennessee won’t play until Week 3. Before the game, both teams have FCS opponents this week in McNeese State and Austin Peay, respectively.

Steve Spurrier criticized Florida and South Carolina’s Week 1 performances

It was a disappointing Week 1 for Steve Spurrier’s old SEC teams, with both Florida and South Carolina losing non-conference games.

“Yeah, they didn’t look very good. Sometimes, the offseason hype — and there was a lot of hype up there from what I heard about how good maybe they’re gonna be this year and this, that and the other. So they got to come back down to earth,” Steve Spurrier said.

“A lot of teams don’t play their first game. The Gators went out to Utah, did not play very well at all. And we got to regroup and we got a team, hopefully, we can beat [in] McNeese State this week. But Tennessee‘s next week. So that’ll be a big game, really, for both schools next week.”
