Steve Spurrier looks at recent Florida results: ‘We definitely have not been very good’
The Florida Gators are off to a slow start in 2024 and with that, there’s been a lot of outside noise and critique of the program. That includes from legendary former Gators player and head coach Steve Spurrier.
Spurrier, while making an appearance on Another Dooley Noted Podcast, explained that looking back on Florida’s recent results shows that things aren’t going well under the current coaching staff.
“We definitely have not been very good,” Steve Spurrier said. “In fact, you know what our road record is in the last 18 games on the road? 2-16…One at Texas A&M. What was the other one? I was at that one. That’s the one I remember.”
In 2023, Florida earned a road win against South Carolina, ironically the other SEC school that Spurrier coached. That game was a 41-39 thriller and also serves as the last game Florida has won against an FBS opponent. Prior to that, Florida’s last road win was against Texas A&M in 2022.

Under head coach Billy Napier, Florida has a record of just 12-16. That includes losses in seven of their last eight games, regardless of where the games were played. With that, Napier has found himself on the hot seat early in the season. Still, Spurrier believes that there should be some amount of patience.

“I think we just need to show a little patience and see what can happen from this year. I mean, all the coaches are going to be there, even if the head coach isn’t. So, I don’t see how it’s gonna make a huge difference if they remove the head coach…So, you might as well, I think, let the staff stay in place for a while, and let’s see what happens,” Spurrier said.
“We’ve only had three games. The two losses against two good teams.”
Steve Spurrier urges Gator Nation to see 2024 out with Billy Napier, current staff
As the hot seat continues to be a major topic around the Florida program, Steve Spurrier urged Gators fans to give the current Florida staff and Billy Napier a chance to turn things around in 2024.
“Give him a chance,” Steve Spurrier said.
“Everybody is under contract. Let them earn their pay. And keep ’em all here and let’s go. See if they can turn it around. … I think we just need to show a little patience and see what can happen from this year. I mean, all the coaches are going to be there even if the head coach isn’t so I don’t see how it’s going to make a huge difference if they remove the head coach. You might as well let the staff stay in place for awhile and see what happens.”
Next for Florida is another SEC game. This one is going to be on the road against a rebuilding Mississippi State team.
