Steve Spurrier: Marcel Reed is ‘much better player’ than Conner Weigman
Steve Spurrier was brutally honest with his opinion on who is the better quarterback between Marcel Reed and Conner Weigman. The former Florida coach watched as Reed led Texas A&M to a 33-20 victory against the Gators on Saturday and came away highly impressed.
The redshirt freshman made his first career start in place of Weigman, who was out with an injured shoulder, and recorded three total touchdowns. Speaking on Another Dooley Noted Podcast, Spurrier made it clear he believed Reed should be the starter going forward.
“(Mike) Elko, luckily, his starter got hurt because the other kid is a much better player,” he said. “My grandson is an assistant quarterback coach at A&M. His fiancée, she was happy that backup quarterback got in there instead of the one that was the starter the first game. So maybe they’ve learned a lot their third game of the year also.”
Reed was effective both as a passer and on the ground Saturday against Florida. He finished 11-of-17 passing for 178 yards to go along with 83 yards rushing on 6.4 yards per carry.

Weigman started the first two games of the season and had thrown for 225 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He completed just 40% of his passes in the season opening loss against Notre Dame, where he also threw both of his picks with no touchdowns.
Aggies coach Mike Elko has yet to say who will start in Week 4 with A&M set to take on Bowling Green in College Station. That has caused many to believe a quarterback controversy could be brewing.
It’s also possible that Weigman is still not at 100% and the Aggies could be using caution as this is a game they could win. However, in Spurrier’s estimation, Reed showed with his performance this past week that he deserves to be the guy.
