On the Thursday edition of the Paul Finebaum Show on the SEC Network, former South Carolina and Florida coach Steve Spurrier called in to break down some of the major topics across college football. One storyline Finebaum asked the legendary coach about what the race in the Big Ten and what he made of the inevitable clash between Ohio State and Michigan essentially for the league crown.

Spurrier agreed that the Buckeyes and Wolverines were the top obvious contenders in the conference, dismissing any other threats. He also put his foot down, calling out the scheduling by those Big Ten teams, especially out of conference.

Here was his full answer on the issue.

“The Big Ten has turned into Ohio State and Michigan this year. That’s about it for up there. And Michigan hadn’t played anybody out of that conference. So they need to toughen up their schedules a little bit, if you ask me, and get some big teams and play each other. But it is what it is. As we all know, scheduling is so important to whatever your record is gonna be at the end of the year. So they’ll be there. The winner, probably, of that game, Ohio State and Michigan, could easily win it all or could easily be one of the Final Four teams.”

Some sharp criticism for the scheduling system in place for the two Big Ten superpowers from Steve Spurrier. But, at the end of the day, Spurrier does envision one of these two teams taking a College Football Playoff spot and possibly winning the whole darn thing.

Those two teams have a date circled at the tail end of the season. Neither team has withstood many challenges thus far, with Ohio State’s passing game and Michigan’s rushing attack leading equally deadly units. Should be another terrific matchup in the Shoe later this season.
