Marshall running backs coach Telly Lockette will remain with the school after his candidacy for the same job at Miami, according to On3’s Matt Zenitz. The news was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg.

“Marshall running backs coach Telly Lockette, who had been a candidate for the Miami running backs coach job, is expected to stay at Marshall, a source tells (On3 Sports). First reported by (Adam Rittenberg),” Zenitz wrote on Twitter. “Under Lockette, Khalan Laborn broke out with 1,513 rushing yards last season. His 2023 group will include Rasheen Ali, who ran for 1,401 yards in 2021.”

Lockette began his stint at Marshall in 2021 as he was the offensive quality control analyst for Miami back in 2020. But, he opted to stay at Marshall rather than return to Coral Gables, this time under Mario Cristobal.

Lockette also spent time at Florida State (2018-19) as the tight ends coach and coached running backs at Oregon State from 2015-17.

Miami hires defensive assistant

Miami is expected to hire Cincinnati‘s Derek Nicholson as the team’s new linebackers coach, according to On3’s Matt Zenitz.

Nicholson played college football in the Sunshine State for Florida State in the 2000s, leading the team in tackles in 2007 and 2008.

He was just hired the Bearcats as their inside linebackers this coach this offseason after three years in the role at Louisville, following Scott Satterfield to the school. Satterfield left the Cardinals to take over the Bearcats in December.

Nicholson has also coached at Alcorn State, Akron and Southern Miss.

His older brother is A.J. Nicholson and his father is Darrell Nicholson. All three had short stints in the NFL.
