Chaos broke loose in the seventh inning of a college softball game between Cal and Louisiana on Sunday night. The Golden Bears found themselves leading 1-0 in the bottom of the inning with one out when it began to rain.

Cal asked the umpires to issue a weather delay while the Ragin’ Cajuns had a runner on second. However, the umps refused as they knew the rain was going to pass soon. When Golden Bears pitcher Randi Roelling threw a wild pitch as a result of the weather, allowing the runner to advance to third. Cal again asked the umpires to reconsider, but to no avail.

Roelling then threw a second wild pitch and the tying run crossed home plate. The Golden Bears were clearly upset as they felt like the sequence was a direct result of the weather. Assistant coach Kailee Cuico was furious, running out on the field to yell at the umpires. She had to be restrained by one of her players and was ejected.

Catcher Lagi Quiroga also exchanged words with the umpires, leading to her ejection. Sophomore Ryann Orange charged toward the Louisiana dugout but was held back in time to avoid a third ejection for the Golden Bears. You can view the moment below.

Cal was ultimately able to secure the final two outs and sending the game to extra innings. The Golden Bears then added two runs in the top of the eighth inning to go on to win 3-1.

In spite of the two wild pitches, Roelling went on to earn the win. She pitched the final 5.1 innings, allowing six hits and striking out four. Anna Reimers started the game and allowed one hit over 2.2 innings.

Acacia Anders and Kaylee Pond tied for the team lead with two hits apiece in the win. The Golden Bears managed 10 hits total as a team compared to just five for the Ragin’ Cajuns.

The victory avenged an 8-0 loss for Cal softball to Louisiana from just two days ago. The games were part of the Louisiana Classic, which took place at Lamson Park, home of the Ragin’ Cajuns.

The victory improve the Golden Bears to 5-1 on the young season. They’ll hit the road for another early season tournament next week as they participate at the Grand Canyon Tournament in Phoenix. Cal will open against Cal State Fullerton at 12:15 PT on Friday.
