Josh Heupel describes feeling as featured guest at Morgan Wallen concert

Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel‘s homecoming in Norman over the weekend was a success. Helping lead the Volunteers to a 25-15 win over an Oklahoma program he once led to a national championship win in 2000 as a quarterback.
Saturday’s game was filled with plenty of emotions for Heupel as he returned to Memorial Stadium. But his return back to Knoxville the day after the game was met with an epic Morgan Wallen concert inside Neyland Stadium. Which included walking out with the country superstar as he took the stage, recently opening up about both moments from over the weekend.
“The good news is that I’m not the star in either of those situations,” Heupel said. “No pressure on me in either one of those situations. It was a home game of a different kind. It was awesome walking into that stadium and seeing 80,000-plus in there.”
As a player, Heupel made stops at Weber State and Snow College before transferring to Oklahoma. Starting under center for the Sooners where he was the Heisman Trophy runner-up and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2000, helping lead the team to an undefeated season. Making him more than comfortable at The Palace On The Prairie.

But helping Wallen take the stage for a sold-out country show may not necessarily be in the wheelhouse of the Vols’ head coach. As current players Nico Iamaleava and Bru McCoy along with Tennessee legend Peyton Manning (in full pads and uniform) accompanied Wallen along with Heupel in a viral, epic moment that they’ll all remember fondly.
“It was a really unique, but cool, experience having an opportunity to be there with Morgan – and obviously, he couldn’t have been more hospitable and kind and friendly when we got into the locker room with him before the concert – and even his family,” Heupel said. “And then obviously having Peyton and a couple of our players there was – it was a fun night.”
The Volunteers’ festivities were well-deserved heading into their bye week as they remain undefeated and now rank No. 5 in the country according to the latest AP Poll. Resuming play next weekend on the road as Heupel leads his team into a matchup against Arkansas.
