Dabo Swinney has perfect reaction to question about Texas A&M opening
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was asked during his press conference on Tuesday if he would have any interest in the Texas A&M opening.
Swinney has been on staff at Clemson since 2003 and the head coach of the Tigers since the middle of the 2008 season. He has won a pair of national titles during his incredible run.
According to Chapel Fowler of The State, Swinney said he isn’t spending any time thinking about the opening in College Station.
“I’m just focused on this job … Always have been. Just trying to beat North Carolina,” Swinney said, according to Fowler. “It must be November — that’s all I can say.”
Dabo Swinney has been mentioned as a candidate for numerous jobs over the years, although he has stayed put with the Tigers. That has worked out well for him and for Clemson.

Before taking a bit of a step back this season, the Tigers had won at least 10 games for 12 consecutive years. Swinney has led Clemson to eight ACC Championships, and the Tigers have won seven of the past eight ACC titles. Even this season, Swinney’s club is 6-4 and favored to beat North Carolina on Saturday, despite getting off to a 4-4 start.
There has been no indication that Swinney is in a hurry to leave Clemson, although he did say earlier this year that sometimes fans lose an appreciation for how hard it is to win.
“I used to tell people all the time, they’d say, ‘What’s the difference in Clemson?’ ‘Let me tell you, at some places there’s an expectation, but at Clemson there’s an appreciation.’ And what’s happened at Clemson is we’ve won so much that it used to be the fun’s in the winning. Now, even when you win, people like you complain. And criticize the coaches and question everything. People like you,” Dabo Swinney said to Tyler from Spartanburg on his call-in show last month.
“I started as the lowest paid coach in this freakin’ business, and I’m where I am because I’ve worked my ass off – every single day. And I ain’t gonna let some smartass kid get on this phone and create this stuff. So if you’ve got a problem with that, I don’t care. I work for the Board of Trustees, the President and the AD, and if they’re tired of me leading this program, all they’ve gotta do is let me know. I’ll go somewhere else, where there is an appreciation.”
