Texas A&M had an impressive, down-to-the-wire victory against No. 10 ranked Arkansas in week 4 winning 23-21. The win bumped the Razorbacks down to No. 20 in the AP Poll, and moved the Aggies up to No. 17, as they’ll take on an opponent this week that gave them problems last season in Mississippi State. Head coach Jimbo Fisher was asked if he felt that this year’s secondary unit was better equipped to go toe to toe with the Bulldog’s air raid attack this season.

“We’ll see, I mean the year before we did a really good job, last year we didn’t do a good job,” Fisher said.

Last season, Mississippi State quarterback Will Rodgers threw for 408 yards and three touchdowns in their 26-22 win over the Aggies. Texas A&M’s secondary was much better last season than they were in that one matchup, ranking third in the SEC in least passing yards allowed per game.

This season so far, they currently sit in the same spot in the conference, holding opponents to just 153 yards in the air per game. But they are facing one of the most lethal passing attacks in the country, as Mike Leach’s air raid offense currently averages 351 yards per game in the passing game.

Fisher laid out what the Aggies will need to do in order to slow down Mississippi State’s passing attack and keep them from being as successful as they were last season against them.

“I think you have to have multiple looks, you have to have different things, and I think you’re gonna have to make plays on the ball and be able to cover,” Fisher explained. “So hopefully we will be and hopefully, we’ll be able to put the pressure on at times when we need to, guys can rush.”

The Aggies held Arkansas quarterback KJ Jefferson to under 200 yards passing last week, the third time they’ve done so to an opposing quarterback so far four weeks into the season. Rodgers has not thrown for less than 200 yards yet this season, or in any game last season, and currently ranks second in all of college football in passing yards (just three yards away from first) and ties for the most touchdown passes with 16.

The Aggie’s secondary definitely has a tall task ahead of them this weekend, as they look to slow down the Bulldog’s passing attack and get redemption on their loss from last season.
