Texas A&M was without a number of key players due to injury on Saturday against Florida, most notably quarterback Conner Weigman. The Aggies QB suffered a AC sprain in his shoulder Week 1 against Notre Dame but was able to play the following week against McNeese State.

So it came as a surprise to many to see him pop up on the injury report Thursday and be listed as a game-time decision for Saturday. A&M coach Mike Elko revealed after the game exactly how it all played out this week.

“With Conner, just so everybody knows, it’s an AC in the shoulder,” he said. “It happened in the Notre Dame game. Kind of went through a process last week where it loosened up as the week went on and he was able to go out and function really well. You kind of anticipated that’s how it would go.

“This week, he had a full practice on Wednesday and was able to go out there and throw the ball. Then just had a setback on Thursday for whatever reason. We’re trying to still figure that out from a medical standpoint. He just wasn’t able to go today.”

Elko also revealed updated on two other key players who missed Saturday’s contest. Cornerback Tyreek Chappell is unfortunately out for the season after suffering a non-contact injury in practice this week.

However, Elko had more hopeful news on safety Trey Jones.

“Trey Jones had an upper body thing happen on Thursday,” he said. “We anticipate him to be back sooner rather than later. Hope he’s back next week.”

Even with those three players sidelines, the Aggies cruised to a 33-20 victory against the Gators and led 20-0 at halftime. They’ll hope both Conner Weigman and Trey Jones can make progress on the injury front ahead of a game against Bowling Green next week.
