Texas A&M running back Rueben Owens is undergoing testing for a lower-body injury suffered during Saturday’s scrimmage, a source told On3.

He was set for an MRI around mid-day on Sunday. ESPN is reporting he is out for the season.

The 2023 SEC All-Freshman Team selection posted 101 carries with 385 rushing yards and three touchdowns in 2023. He also was a factor in the passing game, tallying 12 catches for 109 yards.

A former four-star prospect and top-40 recruit in the 2023 class was expected to be a key piece of the Aggies’ offense this fall. Texas A&M’s primary kick returner, he averaged 20.8 yards per return. Owens was set to be part of a three-headed running back attack in Texas A&M’s backfield next to Le’Veon Moss and Amari Daniels.

The 6-foot, 205-pound running back from El Campo, Texas, Rueben Owens started off slow but adjusted as the 2023 season went on. He averaged 3.8 yards per carry.

“Rueben (Owens) has been good, I knew Rueben a little bit from recruiting,” Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko said this spring. “He has had a really good spring in terms of doing the things he needs to do to take his game to the next level. … He needs to just learn how to be a running back in the SEC and get four and five yards.”

Elko said that Owens has had a “great summer” at the end of July.

Moss led the team in average rushing yards per game (53.8), second in total yards rushed (484) and rushing touchdowns (5) in nine games. Daniels posted 532 yards on 105 carries with six rushing touchdowns, averaging 5.1 yards per carry.

Texas A&M opens the season on Aug. 31 with a visit from Notre Dame.
