Texas is one of four in-state programs working tirelessly to keep Temple (Texas) four-star EDGE Jamarion Carlton home.

The Longhorns are now trending heavily for Carlton in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine. This weekend, the 6-foot-4.5, 230-pounder made his way back to Austin for an official visit.

Carlton will announce his commitment on July 10. He’s now trimmed his list of top schools down to five, with Texas battling Baylor, Texas Tech, Texas A&M and LSU. He’s already taken official visits to TTU and LSU, with trips to A&M and Baylor still on deck for later this month.

“Texas is building something special,” Carlton previously told On3’s Chad Simmons. “They have winning coaches and a winning culture. I have a good relationship coach with coach LaAllen Clark too. He recruited me at Ohio State, so I know him well.”

Carlton is now the No. 43 overall prospect and No. 8 EDGE in the 2026 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 4 player in Texas.

Official visits will play a major role in helping Carlton find his home at the college level. He’s raved about the Longhorns in the past, so his time on The Forty Acres could help Steve Sarkisian and his staff continue to trend for one of its top targets left on the board this cycle.

“Outside of the relationships, playing early will be a factor in my commitment,” Carlton said in March. “That feeling on campus is important for me too. Feeling comfortable and making sure everything fits me is what I am looking for on the visits and when I make my decision.”

Carlton talks other top contenders

In the interview with Simmons, Carlton also dove into what stands out about some of his other top schools:

Baylor: “It is right down the road, so that is nice with Baylor. The coaches make me feel like a priority too. They don’t just say it, but they make me feel it. Baylor was the first school I ever visited too, so I know the coaches well and we have that kind of bond.”

LSU: “They have a reputation with defensive linemen. LSU is a winning school, they push each other and I like coach Kevin Peoples a lot. He is a good guy and I am looking forward to getting out there to spend time with him and coach Brian Kelly.”

Texas A&M: “It is like a family there and I have a great bond with most of the staff. When I go there, everyone knows me and it is a special place. How they welcome me and the hospitality always stands out.”

Texas pushing for Top-10 recruiting class

To date, Texas has the No. 14 class in the nation, per the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. Eight commits are in the class, following four pledges last month.

Willis (Texas) four-star athlete Jermaine Bishop Jr., a top-100 overall recruit, announced a surprise pledge on May 14. on May 9, Texas beat out LSU for New Orleans Edna Karr four-star cornerback Hayward Howard Jr. The No. 12 player in Louisiana, Howard Jr. is now one of two listed defensive prospects in the mix alongside Austin (Texas) Anderson three-star safety Yaheim Riley, a former Houston commit.

“The culture is what keeps me coming back,” Bishop told InsideTexas earlier this year. “Those guys are really great and treat me like family. I got an offer from (Texas) two years ago, so them being able to keep that culture and that bond is pretty special.”

Back in February, Melissa (Texas) four-star offensive tackle Max Wright committed. He checks in just outside the top 300 nationally and is the No. 25 OT in the cycle. Pearland (Texas) Shadow Creek four-star wide receiver Chris Stewart has been pledged since last June.

Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) American Heritage five-star quarterback Dia Bell committed to Texas last June, too. The son of former NBA veteran Raja Bell, Dia has only seen his stock soar since locking in with Sarkisian, AJ Milwee and Co. He ranks No. 4 nationally and No. 2 at QB in the updated On300.

Spring (Texas) Klein three-star interior offensive lineman Nicolas Robertson and Plano (Texas) Prestonwood Christian three-star long snapper Trott O’Neal round out the pledge list.
