Texas star Quinn Ewers is quarterbacking the No. 2 team in the country, and, after an impressive showing in Ann Arbor, he’s now No. 1 on FanDuel’s Heisman Trophy odds list.

The attention Ewers is getting is nothing new for a quarterback who was a unanimous five-star recruit and the On3 industry Ranking’s No. 1 overall prospect in the 2021 class.

Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian talked about Ewers’ focus on the task at hand, when Sarkisian was asked this week about Ewers’ increasing odds to win the sport’s most prestigious award.

“He just doesn’t consume himself of what other people think,” Sarkisian said. “He’s more focused on what he needs to do to perform. He’s more focused on how he can support his teammates and be the best quarterback, leader, teammate that he can be.

“He’s not one of those guys that is on social media all day long. He doesn’t carry his phone around everywhere that he goes. He’s focused on, ‘What does he need to do to put himself in the best position to be successful?’ And that goes all the way to his nutrition, his diet, his sleep patterns, who he associates himself with, his preparation, his work ethic, his understanding of the game plan and the checks and why we’re doing what we’re doing. So I think that consumes his time more so than what odds or polls or whatever people might think.”

Ewers was a play away from leading Texas to the national title game last year. Still, he took a significant step in his second season as the Longhorns’ starting quarterback by guiding the program to its first-ever College Football Playoff appearance.

In 2023, Ewers completed 69% of his passes, threw for 3,479 yards and posted a 22:6 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He logged 300 or more passing yards six times, including in both the Big 12 Championship and the Sugar Bowl CFP semifinal. He also rushed for five touchdowns on the year.

It’s important to note that Ewers was sidelined for two games with an AC joint sprain in his throwing shoulder. That was a year removed from him missing three games after spraining his SC joint, in other words, where the sternum meets the clavicle.

Staying healthy for the full slate of games would help his Heisman chances in 2024. Through two games, Ewers has completed 44-of-63 (69.8%) attempts for 506 yards, six touchdowns and one interception.

Texas has some big-time matchups in SEC play looming, including back-to-back games against No. 15 Oklahoma and No. 1 Georgia on Oct. 12 and Oct. 19, respectively.

“We’re in Week 2,” Sarkisian said. “We got a long, long way to go.”
