Texas, Notre Dame officially announce football home-and-home series in 2028, 2029
Texas and Notre Dame, two of the biggest brands in college football, will play one another again both at home and away towards the end of this decade.
The two programs each announced a home-and-home series against one another between their seasons in 2028 and 2029. The Longhorns will travel north to South Bend in ’28 while the Fighting Irish would then come south to Austin the next fall in ’29.
Texas and Notre Dame are both in the top-five in all-time wins in the sport at fourth and fifth respectively. They’re also very successful in the present with each of them currently at 9-1 overall and in the presently projected field for the College Football Playoff.
If they were to not meet again over the next four years, these would be the 13th and 14th overall matchups in history between the two. Notre Dame has a 9-3 edge in the series but Texas won the most recent meeting. It was a part of their last home-and-home back in 2015 and 2016 with the Irish winning at 38-3 at home first before the Longhorns won a 50-47 outcome in double overtime on The 40 Acres.

They also had home-and-home series in 1952 and 1954 as well as 1995 and 1996. Three of the other matchups were meetings as part of The Cotton Bowl over less than a decade from with two of those, 1969 and 1977, deciding national titles with one apiece for each.
If it all stays on the schedule, Notre Dame would be playing two other opponents out of the SEC in those seasons with a game against Arkansas in 2028 as well as one against Alabama in 2029. Texas has yet to have any other opponent of note on those schedules toward the end of the 2020s.
Texas vs. Notre Dame is definitely a matchup that we could see as early as this year, if not the ones to come, in the expanded playoff. If not, though, they’ll at least know that they’ll play again in a class from now with these set games for ’28 and ’29.
