For the first time in a while, there will be some meaning to a Thanksgiving weekend game for the Texas Longhorns. Yes, ending a series against Texas Tech on a positive note is important but a spot in the BIg 12 Championship game can officially be clinched with a win. People on the 40 Acres know how big Friday night will be with Joey McGuire‘s team coming to town.

Heading into the game, Texas will be a 14-point favorite according to FanDuel. The total will open at 52.5 points, with a fun one expected from Austin. Being an undergo against the Longhorns will be nothing new for Texas Tech who will be attempting to defy the odds.

Texas Tech is coming off a close win in Lubbock over UCF, winning by one point. They have now won three consecutive games but all of them are by one possession. Based on the Fan Duel odds, they do not expect a close one against the Longhorns…

Who are off a good win themselves. Expectations going into Ames were that it was going to be a rock fight and that delivered in the first half. However, Steve Sarkisian saw his team settle down and get a huge win against Iowa State.

Historical conference foes playing for the final time

There is a lot Texas is leaving behind in the Big 12 in favor of continuing their future in the Big 12. Most of them are historic matchups against in-state opponents. Not too many teams have played the Longhorns more than the Red Raiders, with the series dating all the way back to 1928.

Both schools were founding members of the Big 12 back in 1996. They shared a conference well before then too, being staple programs of the Southwest Conference. For years, Texas-Texas Tech has been one fans circle on their calendar.

Friday is a likely sendoff between the two schools unless some kind of nonconference agreement can be made between the two athletic directors. Texas Tech is hoping they can potentially have one over Texas for a long time while Sarkisian wants to earn the first 11-win regular season for the Longhorns since 2009.
