To make it to this stage, Texas Southern, led by Johnny Jones, won the SWAC title and took down Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the First Four round. They won 76-67 after an entire game of lead changes. The Tigers pulled away in the final five minutes to advance.

The Kansas Jayhawks are hot off of a Big 12 tournament title. They beat the Texas Tech Red Raiders 74-65.

The winner moves on to the second round and will face the winner between San Diego State (23-8) and Creighton (22-11).
