Texas Tech forward Darrion Williams has entered the NCAA transfer portal, On3’s Pete Nakos reported. The news comes just days after it was reported that Williams had declared for the 2025 NBA Draft.

Williams played the past two seasons for the Red Raiders after beginning his college career at Nevada in 2022-23. He averaged a career-high 15.1 points to go along with 5.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game this past season.

By entering the transfer portal while simultaneously declaring for the NBA Draft, Williams will keep his options open for the 2025-26 season. He can go through the predraft process and get feedback from pro scouts before ultimately making his decision before the early entry withdrawal deadline on June 15. The 6-foot-6 forward is projected as a second-round pick in ESPN’s latest mock draft.

Williams played high school basketball at Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas. He was a four-star recruit according to ESPN and helped lead his team to the NIAA 5A title game as a senior.

Upon entering the transfer portal, Williams now ranks as the No. 6 overall player in this cycle according to On3’s Industry Ranking. That in mind, he’ll certainly be a valuable addition for any team if he opts to return for his senior season.

Williams is the second Texas Tech player to enter the transfer portal so far this offseason, joining small forward Devan Cambridge. The Red Raiders are coming off of an Elite Eight appearance this past season but now lose their second-leading scorer.

The college basketball transfer portal officially opened for business on Monday, March 24, and will close 30 days later on Tuesday, April 22. As of this writing, more than 1,000 players had already entered their names.

Last spring alone, 1,962 Division I players tested the portal waters. Based on the early numbers from this year, even more could follow. For the first time in history, more than half of the points scored in college basketball were scored by players from the transfer portal, not high school, in the 2024-25 season.

In data gathered over the first two years with transfer windows, the NCAA found most athletes enter the portal within the first four weeks of the portal opening. The study showed that 73% of men’s and women’s basketball undergraduate athletes entered during the first four weeks. That increased to 82% for men and 86% for women in 2024.
