Tim Tebow: Head to head, Alabama 'right now a better team' than SMU
Tim Tebow loves SMU and considers them a playoff team, but when it comes to picking them or Alabama, Tebow believes the latter gets the advantage.
Of course, this is only in the case that the Crimson Tide lose to Clemson in Saturday’s ACC Championship Game. If it’s a close game, well, SMU should still get in, per Tebow.
But he doesn’t sound too confident in the committee should it come down to this situation.
“I believe that,” Tebow said when asked if Alabama was a playoff team on SportsCenter. “I love what Rhett Lashlee is doing at SMU. I think they’re a really good team. They’re improving every single week, they’re explosive, but if they lose to Clemson, I really believe that head to head, you said, who is the better team between SMU and Alabama? I have to say Alabama right now, I believe they’re a better team.”
This is a similar sentiment to Urban Meyer, who said SMU getting in over Alabama in the event of a loss isn’t good for the playoff. At least, in the sense of strength of schedule.
“Now the committee is also in a tough situation,” Tebow said. “Are they going to penalize a team playing in a conference championship? Well, if that game is close, I think the committee will probably have them in. If it’s a blowout and Clemson wins by 17, 21, points, I think they will put Alabama in ahead of SMU. But I think the bigger question is on a neutral field who do you believe is a better team and even though I really love what SMU is doing. I still believe it’s Alabama right now … It’s not fair to (SMU) … it’s a lose-lose either way.”

It’s something SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee warned the College Football Playoff committee of: do not “open up that door.”
“I think if you open up that door, you’re going to see a lot of people do a lot of crazy things,” Lashlee said of dropping a team that lost its conference title game out of the field.
“We’re not going to. We’re going to go play in Charlotte, and we’re going to try to compete for our championship, because that’s the right thing to do. That’s what competitors do.”
SMU and Clemson square off for the ACC Saturday at 8:00 p.m. ET.
