Arlington (Tex.) Seguin defensive back Jamel Johnson is ready to announce his commitment, he tweeted Wednesday afternoon.

The four-star 2023 prospect, ranked No. 185 overall by the industry-generated On3 Consensus, posted a video that says he will commit tomorrow, November 4, at 9 a.m. CT.

Johnson ranks as the No. 26 cornerback in his class and the No. 28 overall prospect in the talent-rich state of Texas. The 6-foot-1, 175-pounder has amassed more than 30 offers, and his finalists include Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas and Texas A&M.

Texas is the favorite to land Jamel Johnson

Of his finalists, Texas appears to be in the best position to land Johnson. The Longhorns first offered him back in February, and their staff has made him a major priority since then. They’re likely to take a minimum of two cornerbacks in the 2023 cycle, but could take more depending on how the transfer portal shakes out.

A source told InsideTexas that after narrowing down his list to 10 schools in September, Jamel Johnson mainly has been focused on four programs: Texas, Oklahoma, LSU, and Alabama.

The Longhorns have multiple coaches in contact with him, though, and have made him one of their top needs in 2023.

On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power pegs Johnson as a strong safety at the college level, noting his ability to close on ball carriers quickly and delivering punishing hits.

“Jamel Johnson is an active run defender and tackler from his safety spot,” Power said. “He’s best as a cover-down defender and shows the ability to deliver big hits at the strike point. We also see Johnson play a bit in coverage as a nickel. Long term, he likely projects as a strong safety. Johnson has also tested as an above-average athlete to this point.”
