College basketball’s season ended just a week ago but the news cycle has not slowed down. Teams are now preparing for next season, with the NCAA transfer portal being everyone’s primary focus. Some high-profile players are out there on the open market, with top programs available to throw their hats in the ring.

With all the portal movement, CBS Sports has released an updated version of their Top 25 and 1 rankings. There is no major movement in the top 10, with reigning national champions UConn still expected to be the preseason No. 1 overall.

However, a couple of commitments have shaken up the middle of the bunch. A soon-to-be Power Six conference member has moved up six spots after making a huge splash this weekend.

Houston makes massive six-spot jump after portal addition

Houston has been one of the best programs over the past few seasons under head coach Kelvin Sampson. The Cougars will be making a massive jump in 2023-2024, moving from the American to the Big 12. Even so, the Top 25 and 1 projects them as one of the best in the conference and a recent transfer portal commitment is a huge reason why.

LJ Cryer will be heading further south from Waco down to Houston to play for Sampson this upcoming season. Cryer has plenty of experience in the Big 12, being named a third-team all-conference member this past season. He also won two regular season championships with Baylor during a three-year stint.

A ton of talent will be leaving Houston, including Marcus Sasser. Even so, five of the program’s top eight scorers will be returning. Add in somebody with Cryer’s quality and Houston is expected to seriously compete in Year One of the Big 12.

Eric Musselman continues to add to 2023-2024 team

Nobody has used the transfer portal better than Eric Musselman. While he has been a force on the high school recruiting trail, the Arkansas head coach keeps the Hogs near the top of college basketball every season by importing proven talent.

Tramon Mark is in from Houston, while Washington‘s Keyon Menifield was a huge win over rival schools for Musselman. He likely is not done yet either, still reaching out to the top available guys in the NCAA transfer portal on a daily basis.
