The more things change, the more they stay the same: Kentucky and Duke are again dominating with the top basketball recruits in the 2022 class. Combined, the Blue Devils and Wildcats have seven of the top 16 players in the cycle pledged. If you add in fellow blue blood, UCLA, nine of 16 are committed to three schools.

But right now, no class is more impressive than John Calipari’s. After a year in which the Wildcats finished with fewer than 10 wins for the first time in nearly a century, Cal has owned the recruiting trail. Not only have the Wildcats landed No. 1 overall player Shaedon Sharpe, they’ve picked up the No. 2 and No. 3 combo guards (Cason Wallace and Skyy Clark), and the No. 1 small forward (Chris Livingston). Each ranking is according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Almost as impressive given its program’s limited history of success is what Alabama has done under Nate Oats. The Crimson Tide will add a pair of top-20 prospects with small forward Brandon Miller (No. 15) and point guard Jaden Bradley. Elsewhere in the SEC, Arkansas has made waves by picking up two elite players of its own. Eric Musselman and Co. kept five-star shooting guard Nick Smith (No. 10) home, as well as snagging four-star forward Jordan Walsh (No. 22) out of Texas. The league, normally known for its football prowess, is looking to take over the mantle of premier college basketball conference, too.

Arguably the most surprising part of the list is the fact that 23 of the top 25 are already committed, with the earliest date most of them will enroll being next June. Things can — and likely will — change over the next six months, but for now, nearly all of the elite 2022 talent is accounted for.
