Xavion Staton, one of the top centers in the 2025 class, has committed to BYU, he told On3.

The 7-0 four-star senior out of Sierra Vista High in Las Vegas chose Kevin Young and the Cougars over Michigan, UNLV, and Stanford.

Staton is the nation’s No. 31 overall prospect, No. 3 center and No. 1 recruit from Nevada in the 2025 cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking — a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Staton becomes BYU’s second commitment this cycle, joining three-star PF Chamberlain Burgess (No. 153 nationally).

Staton on his commitment to BYU

Xavion Staton discussed his decision with On3.

“The overall fit is it for me, with its proximity to home and NBA development,” Staton said. “Being able to be around an NBA ‘program’ with their staff is important to me. It’s a place where I can enjoy living without having to worry about distractions so I’m able to focus on getting better and have fun doing so.”

What led to his belief in coach Young and the coaching staff?

“Coach Kevin Young is really building something up in Provo and him being in the league before coming to BYU plays a part since he knows what it takes to get there. I got along with the staff and it felt comfortable being around them and so did my family which was extremely important. Coach Young’s playstyle at the Suns was exactly how I play. Rim runner, lob threat, defensive versatility, and running the floor. Everything else will come along but he values what I work hard to do and that means a lot in my fit into the program as well.”

Staton has a message for BYU fans.

“Provo nation I’m excited to get to play in an environment like your guy’s. Go cougs! 🤙🏽”

Scouting Report

“The piece of Xavion Staton’s game that pops is the defensive ability. He is an excellent shot blocker with natural feel. He has very long arms with high-set shoulders and a big standing reach and quick-twitch pop. There is an intimidation factor he brings throughout the course of a game. Offensively, Staton needs reps to continue working on his feel for the game. He is a dunker spot, front of the rim-type big right now. Listed as a true 7-footer, he has natural touch beyond the arc, but he needs the reps to work on balance, feet, and load. There is some unique defensive ability, possibly the best rim protector in the class. That will keep him high in the rankings and bring him a lot of notoriety. He plays with a good motor and generally affects play when he is in the game.” – On3’s Jamie Shaw
