College basketball season is right around the corner, and season previews will start to take over the timeline. However, before looking at where things are going, I wanted to take a look at where the sport has been.

On3’s Jamie Shaw takes a look at the college basketball landscape since the turn of the century. Let’s discuss the top ten college basketball programs since the 1999-2000 season.

1. Kansas

Coaches (2) – Roy Williams (‘88-’03), Bill Self (‘03-present)
Conference: Big 12

Kansas is 697-152 since the 1999-200 season. They have won two National Championships and made it to six Final Four and 14 Sweet Sixteens. The Jayhawks have won 19 Big 12 Regular Season Championships while producing 35 NBA Draft picks, three National Players of the Year, and ten Big 12 Players of the Year.

2. Duke

Coaches (2) – Mike Krzyzewski (‘80-’22), Jon Scheyer (‘22-present)
Conference: ACC

Duke is 685-163 since the 1999-2000 season. They have won three National Championships, made it to five Final Fours, and 16 Sweet Sixteens. The Blue Devils have won six ACC Regular Season Titles while producing 54 NBA Draft picks, eight ACC Players of the Year, and four National Players of the Year.

3. Gonzaga

Coaches: Mark Few (‘99-present)
Conference: WCC

Gonzaga is 692-135 since the 199-200 season. They have not won a National Championship but made it to two Final Fours and 12 Sweet Sixteens. The Bulldogs have won 22 WCC Regular Season Conference Championships while producing one National Player of the Year and 17 Conference Players of the Year.

4. Michigan State

Coaches: Tom Izzo (‘95- present)
Conference: Big Ten

Michigan State is 594-231 since the 1999-2000 season. They have won one National Championship, made it to seven Final Fours, and 13 Sweet Sixteens. The Spartans have won eight Big Ten Regular Season Titles while producing 22 NBA Draft picks, two National Players of the Year, and five Big Ten Players of the Year.

5. UConn

Coaches: Jim Calhoun (‘86-’12), Kevin Ollie (‘12-’18), Dan Hurley (‘18-present)
Conference: Big East (‘79-’13), AAC (‘13-’20), Big East (‘20-’23)

UConn is 544-258 since the 1999-2000 season. They have won four National Championships, made it to five Final Fours, and eight Sweet Sixteens. The Huskies have won four Big East Regular Season Titles while getting 26 NBA Draft picks, one National Player of the Year, and four Conference Players of the Year.

6. Kentucky

Coaches: Tubby Smith (‘97-’07), Billy Gillispie (‘07-‘09), John Calipari (‘09-present)
Conference: SEC

Kentucky is 630-210 since the 1999-2000 season. They have won a National Championship, made it to four Final Fours, and 12 Sweet Sixteens. The Wildcats have won ten SEC Regular Season Titles while getting 54 NBA Draft picks, three National Players of the Year, and eight SEC Players of the Year. 

7. North Carolina

Coaches: Bill Guthridge (‘97-’00), Matt Doherty (‘00-’03), Roy Williams (‘03-’21), Hubert Davis (‘21-present)
Conference: ACC

UNC is 609-243 since the 1999-2000 season. They have won three National Titles, made it to seven Final Fours, and 12 Sweet Sixteens. The Tar Heels have won ten ACC Regular Season Titles while getting 31 NBA Draft Picks, one National Player of the Year, and five ACC Players of the Year.

8. Villanova

Coaches: Steve Lappas (‘92-’01), Jay Wright (‘01-’22), Kyle Neptune (‘22-present)
Conference: Big East

Villanova is 583-240 since the 1999-2000 season. They have won two National Titles, made four Final Fours, and eight Sweet Sixteens. The Wildcats have won eight Big East Regular Season Titles while getting 14 NBA Draft Picks, one AP National Player of the Year, and seven Big East Players of the Year.

9. Florida

Coaches: Billy Donovan (‘96-’15), Mike White (‘15-’22), Todd Golden (‘22-present)
Conference: SEC

Florida is 575-251 since the 1999-2000 season. They have won two National Titles, four Final Fours, and eight Sweet Sixteens. The Gators have won six SEC Regular Season Titles while getting 22 NBA Draft Picks and two Conference Players of the Year.

10. UCLA

Coaches: Steve Lavin (‘96-’03), Ben Howland (‘03-’13), Steven Alford (‘13-’18), Murray Bartow (‘18-’19), Mick Cronin (‘19-present)
Conferences: Pac 12

UCLA is 541-268 since the 1999-2000 season. They have not won a National Title, made it to four Final Fours, and 12 Sweet Sixteens. The Bruins have won five Pac 12 Regular Season Titles while gett 34 NBA Draft Picks and three Pac 12 Players of the Year.
