4-star QB Tramell Jones Jr. decommits from Florida State
Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin four-star quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. has decommitted from Florida State, he told On3’s Hayes Fawcett.
The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder had been pledged to the Seminoles since April of 2023, but has now opted to re-open his recruitment.
Jones has missed most of his senior season because of injury, but that hasn’t stopped other teams from pursuing him. Florida is at the top of that list as the Gators look to add a 2025 signal-caller to their class.
The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM) favors Billy Napier and Co. with less than a month until the Early Signing Period. That includes a pick from On3’s VP of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong, which was logged earlier this week.
Jones becomes the No. 2 uncommitted QB in the class
A three-year starter for the Mustangs beginning as a freshman, Jones has thrown for more than 6,700 yards and 70 touchdowns during his high school career. That includes leading Mandarin to an 11-4 record and the Sunshine State’s 4M championship game last year.
That strong play carried over into the offseason, where he ran the show for South Florida Express 7v7 tournaments, including victory at the Overtime OT7 Finals. He had a terrific showing this summer at the Elite 11 Finals throwing alongside many of the nation’s best.
“He showed off a silky smooth throwing motion and release at the Elite 11 Finals,” On3 Director of Scouting Charles Power said at the time. “The 6-foot, 195-pounder has a clean stroke with no moving parts. Jones’ tight throwing motion allows for him to throw with consistently deliver catchable footballs and throw with accuracy. The Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin is a pure pocket passer who is at his best when he can sit back and distribute the ball to surrounding playmakers.”

The On3 Industry Ranking — a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies — tabs Jones as the nation’s No. 21 signal-caller and No. 247 prospect overall.
Along with four-star and recent Michigan decommit Carter Smith, Jones is one of just two uncommitted quarterbacks ranked among the top 50 players at the position.
FSU already looking at other quarterbacks
Smith has become a major target for the ‘Noles since rumors of Jones’ decommitment started in the past few weeks.
The 6-foot-3.5, 198-pounder is planning to visit Tallahassee for Florida State’s final game of the regular season, but will first visit Wisconsin this weekend. UCF is another school working to get him to campus, according to On3’s Steve Wiltfong.
A four-year varsity starter, Smith has amassed nearly 9,000 passing yards, 2,500 rushing yards and 140 total touchdowns. On3 ranks Smith as the nation’s No. 15 quarterback and No. 196 prospect overall. He is the reigning Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Florida.
