There’s seemingly a lot at stake for Travis Hunter and Colorado in 2024 as the two-way star noted the “target” on the program.

There was plenty of discussion ahead of Colorado’s season-opening win over North Dakota State. If the Buffaloes lose, what does that do to Deion Sanders, Shedeur Sanders and Hunter?

Well, they won and Hunter said it’s simply all about winning, despite the individual attention that comes to him and others on the team.

“I got no personal goals,” Hunter said postgame. “I mean, I just want my team to come out here and win every week, and I want us to go out there just dominate, do our job. I mean, we got a target on us, we got to go out and learn. We got to make a statement, we got to let everybody know: we here to stay … That’s why I don’t want to talk to the media. I just want to go to work with my guys and let them know, I’m here with y’all, like y’all got to have my back, just like i got y’all back. Let’s go in here and let’s win.”

Hunter made the biggest play of the game: his insane touchdown catch.

“It’s funny because he got on me for not catching the one that we [got] called a flag, because I told him to throw me the ball no matter what,” Hunter said after the game. “So he got mad at me, like, ‘I don’t care, catch the ball.’ So that one, I just knew I had to catch the ball. I had no other choice, no other option. Whatever I had to do to get the ball, I was going to do it.”

Hunter finished the game with seven catches for 132 yards and three touchdowns, including his highlight-reel grab. He also continued his two-way starring, lining up at cornerback and generally locking down his assignment.

Sure, there’s Heisman buzz about Hunter and Shedeur Sanders, but the team definitely has to improve its defensive play and offensive running game.

But perhaps the biggest key to success, especially if Colorado is to make the postseason, is Hunter’s health.

“We want him to stay healthy,” Deion Sanders said on ESPN’s College Football Countdown ahead of kickoff vs. North Dakota State. “We’re gonna protect him a little bit more. But Travis is a dawg, man. He just wants to play. He don’t want to come out of the game. I’m gonna try to make him come out of the game so he can get some rest because we have more depth defensively at the cornerback position, as well as the receiver position.

“And I know him like a book, so I know when he’s a little winded. He won’t say it – he would never say it. But I got to take care of him.”
