The Michigan vs. Ohio State rivalry is one of the best in all of sports. Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce grew up in Cleveland and was around the rivalry, but just because he’s from Ohio doesn’t mean he solely cheered for the Buckeyes.

Travis Kelce recently revealed on the New Heights podcast that he cheered for both Ohio State and Michigan when he was younger.

Kelce first tried to say that he only cheered for Ohio State: “Ohio State was probably the one school that as a kid I was like ‘that’s the school,'” he said.

However, his brother Jason Kelce called him out: “No, you liked Michigan,” Jason Kelce replied. “You were always a Michigan fan.”

Caitlin Clark, who was a guest on this episode, as well as Jason Kelce, both called Travis Kelce out and said you can’t cheer for Ohio State and Michigan. But he insists that’s what he did.

“The thing is, is I can and I did,” Travis Kelce said of rooting for both teams. “I didn’t go to either one of them, so it’s all good.”

Instead, Travis Kelce went to Cincinnati and had a strong college career, before being drafted in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. He has gone on to become one of the best tight ends in NFL history, helping the Chiefs to three Super Bowls and earning first-team All-Pro honors four times.

A few weeks back, Travis Kelce set the Chiefs franchise record for receiving touchdowns with 77. He set the record on Christmas Day against the Pittsburgh Steelers with a 12-yard touchdown reception.

Kelce broke the previous Kansas City Chiefs record of 76 receiving touchdowns, which was held by Tony Gonzalez. The 35-year-old Kelce is in his 11th season in the NFL.

Kelce isn’t having the best year of his career in 2024, but he is still the go-to weapon for star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He has seven 1,000-yard receiving seasons in his career and he nearly reached that mark last season, finishing with 984.

Before Travis Kelce set the Chiefs receiving touchdowns record, Tony Gonzalez spoke about the possibility of him doing so.

“I don’t want him to break it. Come on,” Tony Gonzalez joked, according to A to Z Sports. “I am so happy for him. He’s one of the best tight ends to ever do it. On and off the field, I’ve been watching him grow. I’ve been following him since he was a rookie. And I’m not surprised by it.

“He’s one of the greatest tight ends of all time. To have myself, then to have Travis to come and take that torch. A lot of history is going to be broken out on this field today.”
