Trent Dilfer, Jon Sumrall have tense postgame interaction following Tulane blowout of UAB
The Tulane Green Wave continue to be one of the better programs across college football. Even though they lost their head coach, Willie Fritz to Houston this offseason, they continue to play impressive football. And the Green Wave put a merciless whipping on UAB on Saturday, thrashing them 71-21. And shortly after the loss, that’s when UAB head coach Trent Dilfer had an intense postgame exchange with Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall.
In the final few minutes, UAB head coach Trent Dilfer decided to make it more difficult to just kneel the game out. He called two timeouts trailing 71-20. And following the game, there was clearly a tense postgame interaction between Dilfer and Sumrall.
Here is the interaction below between the two head coaches.
More on Trent Dilfer, his contract, and career
Dilfer is paid $1.2 million per season. An annual raise is not included in the deal, however, he is eligible for merit raises determined by UAB athletic director, Mark Ingram.
The former NFL quarterback and ESPN commentator was hired in November 2022 after finding success coaching in the high school ranks at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville. A Super Bowl champion with the Baltimore Ravens in 2000, Dilfer is only in Year Two of his five-year contract at UAB.

Dilfer was hired in November 2022 after interim head coach Bryant Vincent went 7-6. The former NFL quarterback went 44–10 in four seasons at Lipscomb Academy, including two consecutive state championships.
UAB went 4-8 in 2023 under Trent Dilfer, with a 3-5 mark in the American Athletic Conference.
UAB’s decision to hire Dilfer was viewed as an outside-the-box hire. He had never coached at the collegiate level or recruited, taking over months into the NIL Era.
