Earlier this week, Trev Alberts shocked many across the college sports world when he decided to leave Nebraska for Texas A&M. He played football for the Cornhuskers and appeared to have things on an upward trajectory at his alma mater, which made it even more surprising he decided to leave.

This week, Alberts’ former employer and his new one will square off in the NCAA Tournament – and his reaction said it all.

“Well this will be fun…” Alberts wrote on X (formerly Twitter), along with a sweating emoji, before congratulating Fred Hoiberg and Buzz Williams on reaching March Madness.

As if it wasn’t crazy enough, Nebraska and Texas A&M are also going to square off in the first round of the women’s NCAA Tournament. That means Alberts will have to watch the Cornhuskers face the Aggies twice this week in two different tournaments.

He summed it up perfectly with a subsequent post.

“You can’t make this up!” Alberts wrote. “Congratulations to Coach [Joni] Taylor and Coach [Amy] Williams.”

Alberts played football at Nebraska and was one of the best linebackers in the country during his time at Nebraska. He won the Butkus Award following the 1993 season and was a consensus All-American. The Huskers also retired his No. 34.

After a short professional career and a stint in media, Alberts got into administration and was hired at Nebraska-Omaha in 2009. He stayed for over a decade until he earned the Nebraska job, joining the Huskers in 2021. He’ll now head to Texas A&M to replace Ross Bjork, who left to replace Gene Smith at Ohio State, and confirmed the decision in an email to staffers.

Alberts’ departure ruffled some feathers, though – notably in the Nebraska governor’s office. Governor Jim Pillen released a statement criticizing the university and the lead-up to Alberts’ decision to leave. The university named executive associate AD for academics Dennis Leblanc as the interim athletics director.

During the Big Ten Tournament this week in Minneapolis, where Nebraska fell to Illinois in the semifinals, Hoiberg addressed Alberts’ departure and shared his confidence that NU would find another strong leader to pick up where Alberts left of.

“I wish Trev the best in his new journey, Trev and Angie,” Hoiberg told reporters when asked about Alberts’ departure. “I’m confident that the leadership will find a really good replacement that will do a great job leading the athletic department. I’m all in on this place. I love it. I want to be here. Hopefully, we can continue to have success, have sustained success at Nebraska. There’s no doubt that we can do it with the fan support, with the facilities that we have. This is a place that is really special, and it’s going to attract a really good leader for our athletic department.

“Again, I wish Trev the best, but we’ve got a job to do right now. We’re focused. You could see that today with our guys, and it’s got to continue. Hopefully we come out and play well again tomorrow. We’re going to have to against a really good basketball team.”
