Senior guard Tru Washington is officially off the board and is headed to New Mexico to play for head coach Richard Pitino.

The 6-foot-3 combo guard out of AZ Compass Prep is the uncle of TyTy Washington (yes, you read that correctly). TyTy spent one year at the University of Kentucky (2021-22) before being selected in the NBA Draft as the 29th overall pick to the Houston Rockets.

Tru is ranked as a four-star prospect according to the On3 Consensus, the average ranking from all four major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 115 overall prospect in the 2023 class and the No. 15 overall combo guard.

Washington is the second recruit to commit to the Lobos in the class, joining three-star forward Jadyn Toppin (No. 138).

Along with New Mexico, Washington received offers from Grand Canyon, Arizona State, LSU, TCU, and others.

Washington on his commitment to New Mexico

“I chose New Mexico just because they always kept it real,” Washington said to On3. “They have been at every AAU game, whether I was playing or not.”

What type of player is New Mexico getting in Tru Washington, in his own words?

“I would describe my game as an energy guy who can play good defense and score from all three levels.”

Washington has a message for Lobos fans.

“Lobos nation, I can’t wait to get out there and play in front of you guys. I know The Pit is a great atmosphere to play in.”

The New Mexico Lobos are currently 20-7 overall on the season, ranking 5th in the Mountain West.

Scouting Report

Tru Washington Scouting Report from On3’s Jamie Shaw:

“Tru Washington is a strong guard who can handle, shoot, and pass. He is a tough-minded defender wanting to guard the opposing team’s best perimeter option. While not a dynamic playmaker, Washington can get you into sets and is not affected by pressure handling the ball. He is a solid shooter and a good athlete. Washington can finish in traffic and absorb contact.”
