True Freshmen Report: Final stats, redshirt status of Texas A&M freshmen

Texas A&M entered the 2022 season as one of the youngest teams in college football largely due to landing the highest-rated recruiting class in the history in the 2022 recruiting cycle. The majority of the freshmen saw action for the Aggies this season, including a couple who have secured starting jobs for the foreseeable future.

The NCAA changed its redshirt rules a few years ago so that players could see action in up to four games while still maintaining their redshirts. Because of that, just ten members of Texas A&M’s historic 2022 freshman class utilized their redshirt this season.

Here’s a look at final statlines and the redshirt status of Texas A&M’s 2022 class.

True Freshmen on Offense

QB Conner Weigman

The five-star out of Cypress (Tex.) Bridgeland started four of the last five games of the season and played in five total games this season, burning his redshirt. Weigman shined in the games he played in and won SEC Freshman of the Week honors for his performance vs. LSU. He finished the year completing 73 of 132 pass attempts for 896 yards and eight touchdowns, with no interceptions. He added 97 yards on the ground.

RB Le’Veon Moss

The four-star out of Louisiana saw action in seven games for the Aggies this season, even starting the win over UMass. He finished the year with 121 rushing yards and a touchdown

WR Evan Stewart

The five-star lived up to the hype in his first season at Texas A&M leading the team with 53 receptions for 649 yards despite missing two games. He came down with two touchdowns on the season.

WR Chris Marshall

Marshall missed the final five games of the season due to suspension, but saw action in six of the first seven games, recording 11 receptions for 108 yards. The former five-star out of Fort Bend (Tex.) Marshall remains suspended indefinitely and his future with the program remains a question.

TE Donovan Green

The four-star out of Dickinson (Tex.) High emerged as the Aggies’ starting tight end early in the year and played in ten games in total. He finished the year with 22 receptions for 233 yards and two touchdowns.

TE Jake Johnson

The No. 1 tight end in the 2022 class, Johnson played in just four games this season due to injury, preserving his redshirt. He recorded one catch for two yards.

TE The Melin Ohrstrom

The four-star from Sweden reclassified from the 2023 class to join the program a year early but spent the year adjusting to the college football environment. He didn’t play in a single game and redshirted.

OL Kam Dewberry

The four-star out of Humble (Tex.) Atascocita saw action in seven games this season, starting five games in the back half of the season.

OL Hunter Erb

The four-star out of the Dallas-Forth Worth area didn’t see action this season, preserving his redshirt

OL PJ Williams

The former four-star out of Dickinson (Tex.) High played in just three snaps against Sam Houston State, but didn’t see action the rest of the season, preserving his redshirt. He was indefinitely suspended after the loss to South Carolina due to an incident in the locker room and his future with the program remains in question.

OL Mark Nabou

The three-star out of Seattle played in just one game, starting in place of the aforementioned Dewberry against Florida because of an injury. He preserved his redshirt and will be a freshman once again next season.

True Freshmen on Defense

DT Walter Nolen

The highest-ranked member of Texas A&M’s 2022 class, Nolen missed the early part of the season with an injury, but played in ten games total, finishing with 29 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He rotated in and out along the line and looked the part of a five-star player.

DL Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy

The former five-star out of Lakeland (Fla.) High suffered an injury in the Under Armour All-American game back in January and wasn’t cleared to play until midseason. Due to the severity of his injury, Texas A&M’s staff did not rush him back and he saw action in just one game, the win over UMass.

DE Shemar Stewart

The former five-star out of South Florida appeared in every single game this season, starting more than half of them and finished the season with 23 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, a fumble recovery and 14 pressures on the quarterback.

DE Lebbeus Overton

After reclassifying from the 2023 class, Overton quickly rose up the depth chart upon enrolling at Texas A&M over the summer. He played in all but one game this season, and led all freshmen in tackles with 31, along with three tackles for loss and a sack.

DE Anthony Lucas

Prior to being indefinitely suspended following the loss to South Carolina, Lucas appeared in seven games this season and had ten tackles along with one tackle for loss. His future with the program remains in question due to his suspension.

DE Malick Sylla

The former four-star out of Katy (Tex.) High played in all 12 games, primarily on special teams, but saw action on the defense late in the year. He finished the season with six tackles and a sack.

EDGE Enai White

The top-100 talent out of Philadelphia played in seven games this season lining up all over the front seven., He finished the year with eight tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack.

LB Martrell Harris

The former four-star out of The Woodlands (Tex.) High played in all twelve games this season, primarily on special teams, but saw time at linebacker late in the season. He finished the year with seven tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble.

LB Ish Harris

The former four-star out of Pilot Point (Tex.) High redshirted and did not see action this season and announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal after the season.

CB Denver Harris

The former five-star out of Houston (Tex.) North Shore played in five games, starting several of those games, prior to being indefinitely suspended midway through the season. He graded out as one of the top freshmen for the Aggies’ this season per PFF with 14 tackles and three pass breakups in just five games of action.

CB Smoke Bouie

The former four-star out of Georgia played in seven games and recorded four tackles on the season.

CB Marquis Groves-Killebrew

The former four-star out of Georgia suffered a knee injury late in his high school career that held him out of action for much of the season. He saw time in just two games this season and recorded two tackles, preserving his redshirt.

CB Bobby Taylor

The former four-star out of Katy (Tex.) High missed the season with an injury he suffered in spring practice. He’s been the vocal leader of the class and remains an active presence as a peer recruiter.

S Jacoby Mathews

The former top-50 prospect out of Louisiana played in ten games this season, recording 25 tackles and three pass breakups. He looks to be in line to step into a starting role next season.

S Bryce Anderson

The former four-star out of Beaumont (Tex.) West Brook played in eleven games this season, totaling 28 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries on the season. He looks to be in line to step into the starting nickel job, taking over for Antonio Johnson, who’s likely headed to the NFL.

S Jarred Kerr

The four-star out of Lexington (Tex.) High missed his senior season and spring ball due to a back injury, but returned this fall to play in eleven games. He finished with 22 tackles, a sack and two pass breakups on the season.

K Ethan Moczulski

The three-star out of Washington did not play this season, preserving his redshirt
