Ty-Laur Johnson is On3’s No. 64 player in the 2023 class. The 6-foot-0 point guard averaged over 20 points per game for his NY Rens team, which finished with five wins and zero losses for EYBL Louisville.

“I try always to get downhill, read the defense, and stay in attack mode,” Johnson told On3. “I love making decisions and making my teammates happy. When I watch film on pick-and-rolls, I like to watch Chris Paul. Defensively, I watch Kyrie Irving. Athletically, I watch Ja Morant. Shooting, I watch Steph Curry.”

The four-star point guard continued his stellar play at Pangos All-American Camp. Things are starting to pick up for the four-star point guard. On3 caught up with Ty-Laur Johnson to see which schools prioritize him.

“I haven’t taken any official visits yet,” Johnson said. “My first visit will probably be to Seton Hall. I don’t really deal with my recruitment; my dad handles it. I just play basketball. I’d like to go see Arizona State; we hear from Pittsburgh, St. John’s, and VCU.

Johnson talks recruitment

Seton Hall: “the new coach, Shaheen Holloway, and I have a great bond. I can really relate to him, where he’s from and how he played. He has been through everything I’m about to go through. Watching what he did with Saint Peter’s in the tournament was impressive. The campus is close to my house in Jersey. He lets his guards go, and gives them a lot of freedom, so that fits my playstyle. I went there for a practice with the old staff.”

Pittsburgh: “They love running pick-and-roll, and I feel like I’m a good pick-and-roll player. They like getting up and down. Coach (Tim) O’Toole’s son plays with me on the Rens.”

St. John’s: “There’s a lot of New York guards, and I think I’d fit in there.”

VCU: “They get up and down; play fast.”

Arizona State: “They have always been a good program. Bobby Hurley is a good coach; he’s from Jersey. I could fit in with them, how they play.”

“I plan to start taking visits at the end of AAU season or by the start of senior year,” Johnson added.

Johnson’s take

“I want to play in a run and gun, fast system,” Johnson said. “I’m comfortable in the pick and roll in the half-court. I can adapt, so location won’t be a big factor for me. I’m going to go wherever I feel best, most at home.
