Illinois put together an impressive 2024 season in Year 4 of the Bret Bielema era. The Fighting Illini finished 10-3, including a Citrus Bowl victory over South Carolina to close things out. Wide receiver Pat Bryant led the charge on offense with 984 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns.
However, Illinois suffered a major blow when running back Josh McCray announced his intention to enter the transfer portal and officially hit the open market April 18. He led the program in rushing with 609 yards a season ago and was one of the first major commitments for Bielema after he took over in Champaign.
McCray’s versatility and playmaking ability were on full display in the postseason following the 2024 campaign. He produced an strong game in a Cheez-It Citrus Bowl win over South Carolina, rushing for 114 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries to bring home the game’s MVP award.
