Tyler Van Dyke injury update: Latest on Wisconsin QB after leaving game vs. Alabama
Tyler Van Dyke has been ruled out for the rest of Saturday’s game against Alabama, Wisconsin announced at halftime. He left on the game’s opening drive with a knee injury and immediately headed to the locker room.
Van Dyke had the Badgers driving down the field before his departure. He completed all five of his passes for 16 yards, and the scramble with 11 minutes to play was his first rushing attempt.
On the halftime show, FOX’s Rob Stone announced Van Dyke’s status for the remainder of the contest. It means Braedyn Locke will take over under center the rest of the way.
“Opening drive of this game for Wisconsin, we saw quarterback Tyler Van Dyke make a run and then grab his right knee,” Stone said. “He went into the locker room, Wisconsin just now confirming he has been ruled out for the rest of this game. So it’ll be Braedyn Locke going the distance at quarterback.”

As Wisconsin came out of the break, Van Dyke was on the sidelines. His leg was wrapped and had a brace on it, and he was using crutches.
After going to the injury tent, Van Dyke quickly headed to the locker room on a cart. Locke then took over at quarterback for Wisconsin and will stay in the role for the rest of the game.

Shortly after Van Dyke’s departure, FOX’s Jenny Taft confirmed Van Dyke was favoring his right knee. He was also having trouble keeping his balance, and the emotions were clear as he went to the locker room.
“Gus, I have to say, these reports are not easy ones because it was clear that Tyler Van Dyke was in so much pain leaving that tent, having a hard time keeping his balance,” Taft said. “It was that right knee. He’s heading to the locker room for further evaluation and imaging, but Gus, he was pretty beside himself in the moment.”
Van Dyke is in his first season with Wisconsin after transferring from Miami, where he had an up-and-down go in his three years as the starter. His best season came in 2021 when he threw for 2,931 yards and 25 touchdowns. However, after struggling with interceptions in 2023, he entered the transfer portal and committed to Wisconsin to take over Luke Fickell and Phil Longo’s Air Raid offense.
But Fickell had more plans for Van Dyke, he told On3’s Pete Nakos in an exclusive interview at Big Ten Media Days. He wanted to get him involved in the run game similar to how he operated in 2021 at Miami, when he took 53 carries for 57 yards. Through two games, he lived up to the billing with 14 carries for 17 yards and a key rushing score against Western Michigan in the season opener.
