After leaving early in an eventual blowout loss to Alabama on a cart to the locker room, the prognosis for Wisconsin quarterback Tyler Van Dyke does not seem promising, as head coach Luke Fickell shared a brief update after the loss.

Fickell didn’t offer much by way of definitive details, as Van Dyke’s injury was back of mind as he worked to coach his team through the rest of the game. But after the final whistle blew, Fickell shared the little bits he knew, and they weren’t good.

“No, he wasn’t able to come back,” Fickell said. “We’ll get a little more clarity hopefully here soon. Get an MRI, things like that. I don’t think it looks real good for us, for him. And that’s really, really difficult. Because I think — I think he was really well prepared and I think he had grown through his first few weeks and was really sharp starting that game.”

Van Dyke suffered what appeared to be a knee injury on a third down scramble on the opening drive of the game. After heading to the medical tent, Van Dyke was seen riding a cart to the locker room. And Van Dyke could be seen visibly emotional as he favored his injured knee and rode into the locker room.

“Gus, I have to say, these reports are not easy ones because it was clear that Tyler Van Dyke was in so much pain leaving that tent, having a hard time keeping his balance,” FOX sideline reporter Jenny Taft said. “It was that right knee. He’s heading to the locker room for further evaluation and imaging, but Gus, he was pretty beside himself in the moment.”

As Wisconsin headed into halftime, the Badgers announced Van Dyke would miss the rest of Saturday’s game. FOX’s Rob Stone shared the news on the halftime show as Braedyn Locke prepared to take over under center the rest of the way. With Locke under center, Wisconsin managed just one more score, a third quarter touchdown while they were already trailing by multiple scores.

Van Dyke is in his first season with Wisconsin after transferring from Miami, where he had an up-and-down go in his three years as the starter. His best season came in 2021 when he threw for 2,931 yards and 25 touchdowns. However, after struggling with interceptions in 2023, he entered the transfer portal and committed to Wisconsin to take over Luke Fickell and Phil Longo’s Air Raid offense.
