Tyler Van Dyke injury update: Wisconsin QB reportedly will miss remainder of 2024
According to Colten Bartholomew of BadgerExtra, Wisconsin quarterback Tyler Van Dyke is out for the rest of the 2024 season. No specifics of the injury are included in the report but says after an MRI on Sunday morning, it’s a knee issue for Van Dyke.
“The University of Wisconsin senior quarterback suffered a knee injury Saturday against Alabama, which was confirmed by an MRI Sunday morning, according to two BadgerExtra sources,” Bartholomew said. “Those sources declined to offer specifics on the injury, but both said Van Dyke will not return to the field this season.”
ESPN’s Pete Thamel was able to confirm the report but provide clarity on the exact injury Van Dyke suffered. It’s a full ACL tear on his right knee and for the time being, there is no timetable for when the quarterback could return.
“Sources tell ESPN that the injury is a full ACL tear in his right knee, and the timeline for recovery isn’t clear yet,” Thamel said via X.

The injury occurred early in Saturday’s game against Alabama. Van Dyke was scrambling out of the pocket and running out of bounds near the first down marker before being tackled. At the time, FOX’s Joel Klatt pointed out the injury may have occurred before Van Dyke made contact with an Alabama defender.

Medical staff immediately went over to the quarterback, who was still on the ground. He was eventually carted to the locker room before emerging in street clothes and in a leg cast.
Van Dyke was a big commitment for Wisconsin out of the NCAA transfer portal via Miami this offseason, bringing in a quarterback with a ton of experience. He won the job out of fall camp against Braedyn Locke, who will now replace him moving forward.
If this winds up being all of Van Dyke’s time wearing a Badgers uniform, he will have thrown for 422 yards and a touchdown on 68 attempts, completing 63.2% of his throws. This was the fifth year of college football Van Dyke had played throughout his career, originally being a member of the 2020 recruiting class.
After three games to open the season, Wisconsin has the week off. Locke and the Badger offense will next take the field on Sept. 28 out West for their Big Ten opener against the USC Trojans. From there, four straight conference games are on the schedule before getting another bye week.
