Tyrone West talks Texas Tech commitment, FSU visit looming
Humble, Texas – Tyrone West was nearly completely off the recruiting radar when he committed to Texas Tech January 30.
Since that time, the 6-foot-2, 185-pounder with long arms and suddenness after the catch has received interest from Baylor, Florida State, Houston, among others.
“My junior season we had a freshman quarterback, so I didn’t get as many targets as I would normally get,” West told On3 Tuesday. “I still had enough good plays to put on my film, and in the long run it got me an offer and I committed. My senior season, I expect to get more targets with our quarterback being older.”
That offer came from Texas Tech January 9. West made a trip to Lubbock January 29 for junior day, and committed to Joey McGuire the next day.
“Around November football season has just ended and I was going into basketball. I got a call from my coach to come down his office. Coach Blanchard at Texas Tech called me and told me that they wanted to offer me. They asked if something was wrong with me because I wasn’t getting many targets. My coach and I told him that we had a freshman quarterback. I went to the junior day in late January. I really liked the atmosphere, the fans and Coach McGuire. And I just decided to commit.”

The commitment wouldn’t have happened without a strong conversation with McGuire.
“He was saying that I could come in and compete, compete for the ball. I liked to hear that it was competing for the ball. I like how they will be a pass first offense, and I will have a lot of opportunity to be successful.”
Florida State visit on deck
The Red Raiders are fully aware that West will pick up offers and receive much more interest this spring. The first team that could extend an offer is the Florida State Seminoles.
“I’m taking an unofficial visit to Florida State March 19,” West said. “I’ve been talking to the receivers coach. He asked me if I could get down. He talked to my 7v7 coach, and my coach said they would get me down on March 19. I don’t know a lot about Florida State yet.”
West is currently running track for the Wildcats competing in the 200 meters, 4×100 and 4×200.
Humble High has a pair of 2024 prospects that will garner attention this spring. Linebacker Jacory Johnson is a 5-foot-11.5, 205-pound striker with 4.6 forty speed. Offensive lineman Ayden Alvarez is a 6-foot-4, 310-pound guard for the Wildcats that is expected to gain a lot of strength in the off-season.
