UCLA transfer quarterback Robert McDaniel has signed with San Jose State, per On3’s Pete Nakos. McDaniel will have four years of eligbility remaining.

McDaniel’s decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal came following the expected arrival of brothers Nico and Madden Iamaleava at UCLA. He wasn’t the only quarterback from the Bruins’ spring roster that his the transfer portal. Joey Aguilar transferred into UCLA from Appalachian State this spring, Aguilar has since transferred to Tennessee, essentially swapping places with Nico Iamaleava, who is transferring in to UCLA from Tennessee.

For McDaniel, however, he originally committed to UCLA as a three-star recruit, according to the On3 Industry Rankings, which is a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services. He was the No. 482 overall prospect in the 2025 recruiting cycle, as well as the No. 31 quarterback in the class.

McDaniel was recruited by the likes of Arizona, Florida, and Indiana, among others. The California native was even committed to Arizona for a time, but flipped his commitment last December. He also held an offer from San Jose State coming out of high school. Clearly, the Spartans were still interested in his services for the 2025 college football season.

San Jose State is coming off consecutive 7-6 seasons, which ironically ended with losses in the Hawaii Bowl in both of those seasons. Though, it was the first season for the Spartans under head coach Ken Niumatalolo.

McDaniel will join his 2025 roster with the status as an Elite 11 finalist. Not to mention he’s coming off a season where he led his high school team to its best season in the last two decades. It remains to be seen if he’ll have a shot at the starting job in 2025.

The spring transfer portal opened Wednesday, April 16 and eventually closed 10 days later on Friday, April 25. As of this writing, more than 3,600 FBS scholarship players have entered the transfer portal following the 2024-25 season.
