WATCH: UConn pitcher Austin Peterson ejected following three-run blast by Stanford
The Stanford Super Regional matchup between Stanford and the UConn Huskies has certainly displayed a number of fireworks from both teams on Sunday. First, Stanford’s Braden Montgomery blasted one of the deeper home runs of the evening, a towering shot that he sent deep into the trees of the Sunken Diamond.
The three-run blast by Montgomery was his 18th home run this season for Stanford.
Then, UConn starting pitcher Austin Peterson was ejected from the game. He was visibly upset as he was ejected and could be seen exchanging words with the umpire as he was leaving the field of play. In college baseball, suspensions cannot be appealed. The ejection means that Peterson is suspended for the next four games for the Huskies and that’s a major loss. If they make it to Omaha, he’ll have to potentially miss time. This season, he boasted an 11-2 overall record heading into Sunday’s Super Regional with a 3.30 ERA. Peterson’s season-high of 13 strikeouts came on Feb. 18 when he faced South Florida.

UConn currently leads the Super Regional Series with Stanford 1-0, but things aren’t looking good for them in Sunday’s matchup. Stanford currently leads Game 2 of the series 8-2 in the bottom of the third inning. Drew Bowser belted a deep solo blast that went deep into the trees of the Sunken Diamond to make the score 8-2 for the Cardinal. After he hit the solo shot, he decided to put on a batman mask and celebrate with his teammates in the dugout.
Stanford got the scoring going early in Sunday’s matchup, scoring two runs in the first inning. The Cardinal added six runs in the top of the second inning, four of which came from the home run blasts by Bowser and Montgomery. If Stanford can hold on and win Sunday’s matchup, they’ll force Game 3.
